What’s new with an old platform > Twitter

Twitter, the granddaddy of social media, has been around since 2006. Twitter is still one of the most used social platforms in existence today. From a place to share and vent one’s struggles and successes to a small audience to a place to launch huge marketing and social campaigns, today, it has huge potential to influence and reach a vast market.

In an attempt to maintain relevance and grow as a platform, Twitter has continued to evolve. It increased its character limit to 280, added video and GIF capabilities, incorporated hashtags, and currently, it is testing edge-to-edge images for a better user experience. Twitter currently has approximately 321 million active users, and 71% of Americans use it for their news sources. With its continued evolution, influence, and longevity, small businesses need to consider the power and potential Twitter can have in marketing their brand along with its products and services.

Audit

If you are currently using Twitter to engage your customers, it is good to conduct an audit regularly. It allows you to see what is working and what isn’t. Twitter Analytics is a great free tool that:

  • gauges tweet performance

  • measures hashtag performance

  • determines the demographics of the people who are engaging with your content

Demographics

Twitter’s largest populations are 25-34-year-old males who make up 19% and women 18-24 years old, the second largest demographic on Twitter. While it would appear that Twitter skews young, 12% are 50 and up.

Your business can do things that can help your Twitter page and posts gain traction, engage customers, and ultimately grow your business.

Good content

Post information about sales, product information and introductions, and events. Twitter users want to participate in discussions that are relevant and useful. Make sure your content adds value to your customers’ day.

Trending

Find out what is trending on the platform and how your business can capitalize on those trends.

Make it visual

Visual content performs the best. It will likely perform better if you can include a relevant GIF, video, or image. Over 97% of users engage more with visual content.

Here are some visual do’s and don’ts:

  1. Use enticing and interesting photos

  2. Use vivid colors (consider a brand color theory)

  3. Illustrations, animations, and infographics are a good idea

Have a presence

Make sure you tweet consistently and often. You want to make sure that you are seen and seen often. Like all your social campaigns, it is a good idea to create a content calendar so you can plan what you will be posting and when and maintain continuity. Here is a Twitter starter kit to help you get started!

Connect with consumers

To make the most of your Twitter campaign, you will want to make sure you are engaging with your followers. When they comment, comment back; if they follow you, follow them back. Get your brand out as much as possible and encourage people to follow and retweet by offering coupons and discounts.

Twitter Ads

You can utilize Twitter ads to broaden your reach. Twitter users can interact with your ads just like they can other posts; they can retweet, comment, and send. Look at the ‘explore’ page on Twitter to see trending topics. It’s a good idea to utilize keywords and hashtags to share your content with people in your industry and with audiences searching for what you have to offer!
